Numbers 17 - Day 176 (link to reading plan)
Scripture: Numbers 17 Commentary: Speak unto the children of Israel—The controversy with Moses and Aaron about the priesthood was of such a nature and magnitude as required a decisive and authoritative settlement. For the removal of all doubts and the silencing of all murmuring in the future regarding the holder of the office, a miracle was wrought of a remarkable character and permanent duration; and in the manner of performing it, all the people were made to have a direct and special interest. Jamieson, R., Fausset, A. R., & Brown, D. (1997). Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible (Vol. 1, p. 108). Oak Harbor, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc. Application: If God called you, then He will confirm your position and role. Notice that Moses or Aaron didn't have to defend themselves against the false accusations. They trusted God to take care of it. Prayer: Lord, Thy will be done. Numbers 16 - Day 175 (link to reading plan)
Scripture: Numbers 16 Observation: Korah, Dathan, Abiran and On incited a rebellion against Moses and suffered the consequences. Application: As leaders, our decisions affect those who follow us. These men were dissatisfied with Moses so they provoked the people against him. 15,000+ people died because of their rebellion. God isn't afraid of hard conversations but He despises grumbling. Prayer: Lord, forgive me for speaking against Your anointed. Numbers 15 - Day 174 (link to reading plan)
Scripture: Numbers 15:37-41 Commentary: tassels on the garments. All adult male Israelites were commanded to sew blue cords into the four quarters of the hem of their robes as a perpetual reminder of God’s commandments. The blue dye was extracted from the gland of the Murex trunculus snail and was very costly (see comment on 4:6). Decorative hems are common in ancient Near Eastern fashion as many reliefs, paintings and texts attest. Hem design was often an indication of a person’s status or office. The tassels are symbolic and are designed to promote right action, not to serve as an amulet to ward off danger or temptation. The blue cord may signify the status of each Israelite as a member of a kingdom of priests (see comment on Ex 19:5–6). Matthews, V. H., Chavalas, M. W., & Walton, J. H. (2000). The IVP Bible background commentary: Old Testament (electronic ed., Nu 15:37–41). Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity Press. Application: Do what you need to do to stay faithful. The tassels were supposed to serve as a reminder to obey all of the Lord's commands. Whether it's post-it notes, reminder alarms on your phone or computer, a messaging service - if it works, use it to help you love God and your neighbor as yourself (which includes our family). Prayer: Holy Spirit, please fill me afresh and rekindle my love for You. Numbers 14 - Day 173 (link to reading plan)
Scripture: Numbers 14:1-4 Observation: The Israelites complain about their situation and surmise that it would be better to go back to Egypt than to face the giants in the promised land. Application: God does not like whiners, especially those who have already experienced His power. Prayer: Lord forgive me for my complaining. Be patient with me and show me Your unfailing love. Numbers 13 - Day 172 (link to reading plan)
Scripture: Numbers 13:25-33 Observation: The Lord instructs Moses to send 1 leader from each tribe to explore the land of Canaan and to bring back their report. The men return and report that indeed the land is "flowing with milk and honey" but there are giants living in the land so they discourage everyone from entering it. Application: If God is for us, then who can be against us. There will always be giant challenges in our lives that appear impossible to overcome. However if God has called you to do something, then He will fight for you. We just need to be obedient and trust Him. Prayer: Lord, give me the courage to fight. |
