Revelation 8 - Day 867 (link to reading)
Scripture: Revelation 8 Observation: And so it begins… Thought to Ponder: 1 Peter 4:17 - For it is time for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? Prayer of confession: Merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed. We have not loved you with our whole heart and mind and strength; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. In your mercy, forgive what we have been, help us amend what we are, and direct what we shall be, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. Scripture: Revelation 7:9 Observation: John witnessed one hundred forty-four thousand, from the tribes of Israel, who were marked with the seal of God but also saw a vast crowd, too great to count standing before the Lamb who remained faithful in the great tribulation. Application: John doesn’t make any reference to seeing himself in either group. Meaning that the number isn’t complete, and still open for others to join. Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for Your grace that gives me hope. Revelation 6 - Day 865 (link to reading)
Scripture: Revelation 6: Commentary: The opening of the first seal in Rev 6:1 unleashes a barrage of judgments that last through ch. 20. In the first series of these judgments (the opening of the seals in 6:1–8:1), John introduces the four horsemen of the apocalypse, the martyrs, and the awesome, destructive power of the Lamb. Rather than bringing about total destruction, these judgments serve to call people to repentance. Barry, J. D., Mangum, D., Brown, D. R., Heiser, M. S., Custis, M., Ritzema, E., … Bomar, D. (2012, 2016). Faithlife Study Bible (Re 6:1–17). Bellingham, WA: Lexham Press. Application: Repent and turn to God. Prayer: Lord Jesus, have mercy on me a sinner. Scripture: Revelation 5:4-6 Thought to Ponder: The Lion of Judah looked like a Lamb that 'had been slaughtered’ - with seven horns (biblical symbol for omnipotence) and seven eyes (biblical symbol for omniscience). Commentary: When a scroll was finished, it was fastened with strings and the strings were sealed with wax at the knots...These were not seven writings each separated by a seal; but seven seals all set upon one scroll. All the seals must be opened before the scroll could be read. “Roman law required a will to be sealed seven times as illustrated in the wills left by Augustus and Vespasian for their successors.” (Walvoord) “It is worthy of remark that the opening of the seals is not merely a declaration of what God will do, but is the exhibition of a purpose then accomplished; for whenever the seal is opened, the sentence appears to be executed.” (Clarke) Chewing the Cud: The scroll represents the culmination of history. The Lamb is the only one worthy to open the scroll and as he breaks each seal, it is he, who releases the manifestations of God’s judgment upon the earth. Prayer: Lord Jesus, have mercy on me, a sinner. It is by Your grace alone that I am able to kneel before You, and as I do so, I plead for my family and friends who do not recognize You as their Lord and Savior. Please extend Your mercy to them... Scripture: Revelation 4 Observation: As John is invited “in the spirit” to heaven, he tries to explain what he is experiencing. Application: Like Dorothy, in the movie “The Wizard Of Oz,” John is transported to a magical world that he can barely describe. The difference here is that our Lord Jesus is not using tricks or optical illusions to deceive his audience. Rather, he is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords who deserves to be worshipped forevermore. Prayer: Holy, holy, holy are You Lord God, the Almighty - the One who always was, who is, and who is still to come. |
