Psalm 35, 36 - Day 397

2/1/2022

Psalm 35, 36 - Day 397  (link to today's reading)

Scripture: Psalm 36:5-6

Commentary: This wonderful description of the manifold brightness of the divine nature is introduced in this psalm with singular abruptness. It is set side by side with a vivid picture of an evildoer, a man who mutters in his own heart his godlessness, and with obstinate determination plans and plots in forgetfulness of God. Without a word to break the violence of the transition, side by side with that picture, the Psalmist sets before us these thoughts of the character of God. He seems to feel that that character was the only relief in the contemplation of the miserable sights of which the earth is only too full. We should go mad when we think of man’s wickedness unless we could look up and see, with one quick turn of the eye, the heaven opened and the throned Love that sits up there gazing on all the chaos, and working to soothe sorrow, and to purify evil.

Application: Words cannot describe the exhilaration of being loved by God.  Every cell within my body tingles as I sense the Holy Spirit revealing her love to me...

Prayer: Lord, who am I...

Psalm 33, 34 - Day 396

1/31/2022

Psalm 33, 34 - Day 396  (link to today's reading)

Scripture: Psalm 34:8

Commentary: This is an address to others, founded on the experience of the psalmist. He had found protection from the Lord; he had had evidence of His goodness; and he asks now of others that they would make the same trial which he had made.  Barnes' Notes on the Bible

Application: In order to share the good news of Jesus, a person must first experience the good news of Christ.  From his personal experiences, David is able to proclaim that the Lord is good.

Prayer: Lord, You are good...

Psalm 31, 32 - Day 395

1/30/2022

Psalm 31, 32 - Day 395  (link to today's reading)

Scripture: Psalm 31:9-10

Observation: Psalm 31 is a lament psalm in which David is trying to work through a problem in his life with the Lord’s help, as it turns out, this particular problem is Absalom's coup to kill his own father.

Application: God already knows what we're going through.  Yet He welcomes our pleas for help, like most caring parents.

Prayer: Lord, have mercy on me, for I need You...

2 Samuel 24 - Day 394

1/29/2022

2 Samuel 24 - Day 394  (link to today's reading)

Scripture: 2 Samuel 24:24

Observation: David sins by ordering a census of all the Israelites.

Application: In his restitution, David is instructed to offer a sacrifice to the Lord on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.  Araunah willingly offers the property to David, but the king insists on buying it, for he will not present burnt offerings to the Lord that have cost him nothing.  What am I offering to God?

Prayer: Lord, I give You my heart, I give You my soul...

2 Samuel 23 - Day 393

1/28/2022

2 Samuel 23 - Day 393  (link to today's reading)

Scripture: 2 Samuel 23:8-17

Observation: This passage introduces us to three of David's mighty warriors.

Application: The "three" heard David whimsically share how he longed for a drink of water from the well by the gate in Bethlehem (his hometown) so they broke through the Philistine ranks and drew some water from the well and brought it back to David.  Recognizing their sacrifice, David refused to drink the water and instead honored their loyalty by pouring it out as an offering to the Lord.  Wow.

Prayer: Lord, I stand in awe of You...
