Philemon - Day 650 (link to reading)
Scripture: Philemon 1:18-19 Observation: The epistle to Philemon is one of my favorite stories in the Bible. In order to fully appreciate the text, we need a little background to understand what’s going on. Here’s a short video from the Bible Project to help. Application: The gist of the situation, as described in verses 18-19, is that Paul has asked Philemon to forgive Onesimus for an offense. What strikes me is the fact that Paul is willing to put his money where his mouth is, by taking on Onesimus’ debt himself. There are only a handful of people who I would do that for, mostly family. Question to consider - would anyone do that for me? Have I earned someone’s trust so that they would pledge their life for me? Prayer: Lord, thank You for trusting me. Colossians 4 - Day 649 (link to reading)
Scripture: Colossians 4:7-15 Observation: Paul commends his co-workers for Christ to the Colossians. Application: God never intended for us to "do" ministry alone. Before Jesus ascended to heaven, he commissioned his apprentices to make apprentices of all nations. Paul's final greetings to the Colossians highlights his successful effort to obey his Lord's command. Prayer: Lord, thank You for the opportunity to represent You... Colossians 3 - Day 648 (link to reading)
Scripture: Colossians 3:12-14 Observation: Paul instructs the church at Colossae to die to their earthly ambitions and clothe themselves with Christ. Application: Jesus was compassionate. He was kind. Instead of flaunting his awesomeness, he chose humility and gentleness. The early followers of Jesus were called "Christians" which literally means "little Christ" because they followed his example. What would happen if Christians today followed Jesus' example. Prayer: Lord, help me follow Your example... Colossians 2 - Day 647 (link to reading)
Scripture: Colossians 2:6-8 Observation: Paul reminds the church at Colossae to base their faith (actions) in Christ, not the new “fad” that everyone is getting excited about. Application: It amazes me how easy it is to get caught up in a new craze or the next best thing - even in the church. "Liberation theology, small group movement, life on life, health and wealth (prosperity gospel), being missional” are a few campaigns that come to mind. These “movements” gained momentum because they found an audience that resonated with the bit of truth that highlighted their uniqueness. Ultimately, Jesus is the creator of all things and He is the “glue” that holds all things together, so there really is “nothing new under the sun.” Therefore, let’s focus on our obedience to Jesus, which starts with loving God with all of our heart, mind, soul and strength. And loving our neighbor as ourselves. Prayer: Lord, thank You for making it so simple to understand. Colossians 1 - Day 646 (link to reading)
Scripture: Colossians 1:15-20 Observation: Paul explains his epiphany of Christ to the Colossians. Application: Jesus, the Christ, is like the glue that holds the whole universe together. Everything was created through him and for him. He is the beginning and the end. Yet, in his love for us, he humbled himself to reconcile everything back to God. Wow. Prayer: Lord, in my awe of You, I'm speechless. Please listen to my heart... |
