Exodus 17 - Day 70 (link to reading plan)
Scripture: Exodus 17:1-7 Observation: You would think by now that Moses and the Israelites would have learned to trust God for all of their needs. However, sanctification is a slow process of being transformed into the image of Christ, and we need to remind ourselves that Jesus technically hasn't been born yet. Application: There's an old saying that goes something like, "You can take the boy/girl off the island but you can't take the islands out of the boy/girl." Apparently, "Egypt" is still in the Israelites and something needs to change quickly, or else there will be dire consequences. Prayer: Lord, thank You for being patient with me. Please help me to Exodus 16 - Day 69 (link to reading plan)
Scripture: Exodus 16:22-27 Observation: God institutes the Sabbath by instructing the Israelites to rest on the seventh day. Application: Something as simple as resting from work to spend time with God has changed the human labor laws around the world for the better. Nowadays we take a 40-hour workweek for granted but in ancient times, this practice distinguished the Israelites from the rest of the world. Initially, the Israelites were considered lazy and poor workers but gradually communities came to realize the many benefits of resting from our work. Prayer: Lord thank You for the gift of Sabbath, please help me to find my rest in You. Exodus 15 - Day 68 (link to reading plan)
Scripture: Exodus 15:22-27 Observation: The Israelites immediately celebrate their deliverance from the Egyptians with a song but that's short-lived as they wander in the desert looking for water. It doesn't take them very long to start complaining about their conditions, especially the lack of water for them to drink. Application: Our true self, what's on the inside of us, is revealed when we face challenges, not when everything is going well. The Israelites have some soul searching to do as they come to grips with who they really are. Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for Your grace and love that transforms me into Your image. Exodus 14 - Day 67 (link to reading plan)
Scripture: Exodus 14:5-15 Observation: God is not finished with Pharaoh and the Egyptians, so He has the Israelites camp by the Red Sea. Pharaoh and his leaders realize their "mistake" and decide to muster their army and pursue the Israelites. The people cry out in fear but Moses reassures them that God will deliver them (notice that Moses is more confident), but in verse 15, God tells Moses, "Get moving!" Application: God's plans require us to actively participate in what He is doing and not just stand around twiddling our thumbs. Prayer: Lord thank You for delivering me from my oppression and empowering me to get moving. Exodus 13 - Day 66 (link to reading plan)
Scripture: Exodus 13:8-10 Observation: God instructs Moses to have the Israelites remember that God rescued and delivered them from Pharaoh and the Egyptians by instituting an annual festival where they recite this teaching. Application: Repetition is a good way to lock in what we want to remember. Reading the bible every day is a great way to connect with God and to remember what He has done in our lives. Prayer: Thank You Lord for reminding me of how good You are to me. |
