Isaiah 17 & 18 - Day 506 (link to today's reading)
Scripture: Isaiah 18:4 Commentary: Is not this a marvelous conception of God — being still and watching? His stillness is not acquiescence. His silence is not consent. He is only biding his time, and will arise, in the most opportune moment, and when the designs of the wicked seem on the point of success, to overwhelm them with disaster. As we look out on the evil of the world; as we think of the apparent success of wrong-doing; as we wince beneath the oppression of those that hate us, let us remember these marvelous words about God being still and beholding. Application: In my finite ability to comprehend life, I'm inclined to think that my way of doing things is better than your way. In God's omniscience, He patiently abides His time. Prayer: Lord, help me to believe... Isaiah 15 & 16 - Day 505 (link to today's reading)
Scripture: Isaiah 15:5 Commentary: Moab was once thickly populated, and very fertile. But the country is now strewn with ruins; a few broken shafts of columns alone are standing, and deep wells cut into the heart of rock. That such a civilization should pass so entirely away, leaving no trace behind it, must have seemed most unlikely to the prophet’s contemporaries; but these words have been literally fulfilled. Application: God's word will come to pass. Just because we don't believe it or can't imagine what will happen doesn't mean that it won't. We need to constantly remind ourselves that the world doesn't revolve around us. Prayer: Lord, Thy will be done... Isaiah 14 - Day 504 (link to today's reading)
Scripture: Isaiah 14:12 Commentary (In The Word): Today’s verses are the end of an oracle against Babylon that begins in Isaiah 13:1f. Although the rulers of Babylon were as prideful and arrogant as any on earth, the writer points to another prideful being. Beginning in Isa 14:12, he writes of the “morning star,” a term translated as “Lucifer” in the Latin version of the Bible. This “morning star” is Satan, the once-beautiful angel who wanted to exalt himself above God. His five “I will” boasts outline his plot to claim the power and glory of God for himself. But God did not tolerate Satan’s arrogance: “Your heart became proud…So I threw you to the earth” (Ezek 28:17). Satan’s prideful rebellion changed the course of human history in the Garden of Eden. Application: God gives grace to the humble and opposes the proud. Prayer: Lord, help me to die to my pride... Isaiah 12 & 13 - Day 503 (link to today's reading)
Scripture: Isaiah 13:11 Observation: Isaiah's prophesy foretells Babylon's coming destruction because of their evil ways. Application: Are we any different than Babylon or the other empires of the past? Prayer: Lord have mercy on me/us, for our sins... Isaiah 11 - Day 502 (link to today's reading)
Scripture: Isaiah 11:1-2 Commentary (gotquestions.org): The Hebrew ruach means “wind,” “breath,” or “spirit”...God used the phrase Ruach Yahweh in His promise that the Messiah would be empowered by the Holy Spirit: “The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him—the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the LORD” (Isaiah 11:2; see also Isaiah 42:1). This prophecy was fulfilled in Jesus; at His baptism in the Jordan River, John saw “the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him” (Matthew 3:16). Application: The Holy Spirit is often misunderstood in our Christian churches today. The Holy Spirit is God and we should welcome Him/Her into our lives. Prayer: Holy Spirit You are welcome here Come flood this place And fill the atmosphere Your glory God Is what our hearts long for To be overcome By Your presence, Lord |
