1 Samuel 16 - Day 350 (link to today's reading)
Scripture: 1 Samuel 16:6-7 Observation: The Lord instructs Samuel to anoint the next king of Israel. Application: The Lord doesn't see things the way we see them. Samuel was impressed by Eliab's physical attributes but God doesn't look at our outward appearance but looks at our heart. Prayer: Thank You Lord... 1 Samuel 15 - Day 349 (link to today's reading)
Scripture: 1 Samuel 15:1-9 Observation: Samuel relays God's message to Saul to completely destroy the Amalekites for opposing Israel when they came from Egypt. Application: Saul slaughtered the Amalekites but spared Agag, the Amalekite king, and kept the best of the sheep, goats, cattle, fat calves, and lambs. "They destroyed only what was worthless or of poor quality" (verse 9b). Sadly, because of Saul's insecurity, he rationalized his disobedience and subsequently disqualified himself from the throne. Prayer: Lord, have mercy on me a sinner... 1 Samuel 14 - Day 348 (link to today's reading)
Scripture: 1 Samuel 14:6-15 Observation: Jonathan and his armor-bearer "test the waters." Application: Jonathan understands that God can do anything He wants to do, even defeat a garrison of Philistine warriors with only 2 Israelites. However, he isn't presumptuous in assuming victory. Rather, he asks God for a sign to confirm His blessing. It's far better to ask God for permission to join what He is doing than to assume that He will bless what you want to do. Prayer: Lord, lead me... 1 Samuel 13 - Day 347 (link to today's reading)
Scripture: 1 Samuel 13:6-14 Observation: Saul takes it upon himself to offer the priestly sacrifice for God's blessing. Application: We do the darndest things when we're afraid. Instead of calling out to God for help, Saul tries to solve his problem and in the process makes the situation worse. God is willing to work with us but we need to trust Him and obey, even when it doesn't look good. Prayer: Lord, please turn Your face toward me, that I may be blinded by Your beauty and lost in Your presence... 1 Samuel 12 - Day 346 (link to today's reading)
Scripture: 1 Samuel 12:1-5 Observation: As Samuel gives his farewell address to the Israelites, he professes his innocence and challenges anyone to question his integrity. Application: Samuel was used by God because he was a man of honor. He was a model for the Israelites and us, to admire and follow. Thankfully, for those of us who have fallen short of Samuel's example, God extends His grace to anyone willing to humble themselves, confess and repent of their sins. Prayer: Lord, thank You for Your grace, I have repeatedly fallen short and need Your forgiveness... |
