1 Samuel 21 - Day 355 (link to today's reading)
Scripture: 1 Samuel 21:1-7 Observation: in David's haste to escape from the mad king, he visits Ahimelch the priest to ask for food and deceives him. Application: Our actions have consequences that can come back to haunt us. David lies to the priest of God to save his own life but does so at the peril of an innocent man. Prayer: Lord, keep me on Your righteous path... 1 Samuel 20 - Day 354 (link to today's reading)
Scripture: 1 Samuel 20 Observation: The author describes the genuine love and friendship that David and Jonathan had for each other. Application: Everyone needs a Jonathan (or Joanna). Everyone needs a friend who will encourage you when you're down and celebrate with you when you have a reason to rejoice. David was there for Jonathan and vice versa. They fought their common enemy together. They served their king together. They were there for each other. The best way to develop a lasting friendship is to be a great friend. Prayer: Lord, help me to serve my friends... 1 Samuel 19 - Day 353 (link to today's reading)
Scripture: 1 Samuel 19:1-9 Observation: Saul instructs his son Jonathan to kill David. However, Jonathan persuades his father not to harm his faithful servant. Application: Our insecurities will haunt us where ever we go. Prior to becoming king, Saul struggled with his inability to lead and physically hid from Samuel. Now that Saul is the king, he's still dealing with the demons that tormented him. Our character is forged in our struggles so embrace the challenges that you face by surrendering your will to Jesus. Prayer: Lord, have mercy on me a sinner... 1 Samuel 18 - Day 352 (link to today's reading)
Scripture: 1 Samuel 18:1-10 Commentary: Saul’s jealousy. The immediate result of David’s exploit against Goliath was a place at court, and he gained a high rank in the army. Jonathan, whose earlier exploit had also caused an Israelite victory, showed no jealousy of this new man at court; on the contrary, he quickly made a lasting friendship with him. Indeed, his actions towards David seemed to signify that he saw in David a greater man than himself, a man who deserved to lead Israel in the future. With far less cause, Saul did show jealousy. The popular song that angered him was never intended to make him inferior to David; the numbers were not meant to be exact! Rather, the song was meant to declare what a fine team David and Saul made. Even so, it can readily be seen that David’s successes and popularity gave him the potential to become a rival of Saul, if he wished to do so. Saul’s fears were misplaced but not irrational. Payne, D. F. (1994). 1 and 2 Samuel. In D. A. Carson, R. T. France, J. A. Motyer, & G. J. Wenham (Eds.), New Bible commentary: 21st century edition (4th ed., p. 314). Leicester, England; Downers Grove, IL: Inter-Varsity Press. Application: God graciously invites us to partner with Him to manifest the Kingdom of Heaven here on earth. It's God's Kingdom. It's His plan. It all belongs to Him. Saul forgot and his insecurities led him to his demise. Prayer: Lord, please help me to remember... 1 Samuel 17 - Day 351 (link to today's reading)
Scripture: 1 Samuel 17:26 & 30 Observation: The author introduces us to one of the greatest stories in the bible, the tale of a teenage boy who overcomes a giant warrior named Goliath. Application: Interestingly, most sermons overlook verses 26 & 30 when the triumphant story of David and Goliath is told. I only mention this because David was human just like you and me. David was astonished to learn what the reward would be for the man who could rid Isreal of this pagan barbarian. Being confident in his abilities, he was genuinely surprised that no one had taken the challenge and earned the prize. Prayer: Lord, please help me to develop my skills to be as confident and faithful as Your servant David. |
