Exodus 21 - Day 74 (link to reading plan)
Scripture: Exodus 21:1 Commentary: The conclusion to the Book of the Covenant, like its beginning, summarizes its point and its emphasis and links it unmistakably to the Decalogue that is its root Like the Decalogue, the Book of the Covenant is presented as Yahweh’s expectation of Israel (see Explanation on 20:1–17). The “guiding principles,” the commands, the prohibitions that make up the collection that is Exod 20:23–23:19 are all to the end that the integrity of Israel’s relationship to Yahweh be guaranteed. The Decalogue begins with the command that Israel have no god other than Yahweh. The Book of the Covenant begins (20:23) and ends (23:32–33) with that same command, and all that lies between that beginning and that ending is designed to assure its obedience. Durham, J. I. (1987). Exodus (Vol. 3, pp. 336–337). Dallas: Word, Incorporated. Application: What God expected from the Israelites so long ago, still applies to us today. Prayer: Lord, search my heart and purge anything that's keeping me from fully loving You. ReplyForward Comments are closed.
