Numbers 8 - Day 167 (link to reading plan)
Scripture: Numbers 8:23-26 Commentary: Finally the age of service for Levites is fixed as twenty-five to fifty (vv 23–26). The older Levitical tradition about the age at which service is to begin (Num 4:3) is thus extended, probably in the light of contemporary need. With the question of pedigree paramount in post-exilic times, properly authenticated Levites may have been at a premium. The earlier tradition had been so closely tied to the Levitical census in Num 4 that it was possible to approach the issue of service directly at this point, and to give a different and definitive age at which it was proper for service to begin. It was appropriate enough to add this note after the rite for the cleansing of Levites had been described. Budd, P. J. (1984). Numbers (Vol. 5, p. 94). Dallas: Word, Incorporated. Application: There is more to life than just working, even in ministry. However, even in retirement, we are to keep active and be useful. God prescribed retirement as a natural season of life that was intended to be enjoyed while remaining engaged. Prayer: Lord, thank You for keeping us involved in the work of ministry regardless of our age. Comments are closed.
