1 Chronicles 9 - Day 567 (link to today's reading)
Scripture: 1 Chronicles 9:1-2 Commentary (enduringword.com): But Judah was carried away captive to Babylon because of their unfaithfulness: In one sentence, the Chronicler reminds us that it was not the clash of empires or the intrigues of the geopolitical scene that doomed the kingdom of Judah. It was their unfaithfulness to God. If they had remained faithful, God would have protected them amid the rise and fall of a hundred powerful empires. Application: God wants our hearts. Although that may seem impossible to measure, it's often revealed by our attitude and willingness to obey His instructions. The Israelites said one thing but their actions proved that they were lying because they chased after idols and foreign gods. Prayer: Lord, please draw me close to You... 1 Chronicles 7 & 8 - Day 566 (link to today's reading)
Scripture: 1 Chronicles 7:2 Commentary (truthaccordingtoscripture.com): there is a sentence which presents an excellent family record—"They were valiant men of might in their generations;" while the reference is to the sons of Issachar, and is therefore the more notable because in pronouncing upon each member of his family, Jacob had represented Issachar as a "strong ass," a figure not suggestive of fire and courage, and love of battle. Sometimes the man's sons are better than the man himself. It is important to notice this, lest some who are conscious of an unfavourable ancestry should lose heart and resign themselves to the tyranny of mere fate. Application: Despite the "curse" of their family name, these men chose to be valiant and do the right thing. Always remember that "what is," doesn't always have to be. Prayer: Lord, complete Your will in and through me... 1 Chronicles 5 & 6 - Day 565 (link to today's reading)
Scripture: 1 Chronicles 5:1-2 Commentary: The lineage of Reuben is introduced by an explanation of that tribe’s fall from divine favor and replacement by Judah. As Jacob’s firstborn, Reuben would ordinarily expect to be the son through whom the leadership and covenant blessing would be transmitted. But Reuben committed adultery with his father’s concubine Bilhah (Gen. 35:22), and so forfeited his privileges. The right of primogeniture then fell to Joseph (i.e., Joseph’s sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, Gen. 48:15–22), though through Judah came a ruler (David), and through him the Ruler, Jesus Christ (cf. comments on Gen. 49:8–12). Merrill, E. H. (1985). 1 Chronicles. In J. F. Walvoord & R. B. Zuck (Eds.), The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures (Vol. 1, p. 596). Victor Books. Application: Like Reuben, we too have sinned against God. However, we have the advantage of Jesus' forgiveness. Cherish this gift of life we have received by God's grace. Prayer: Lord Jesus, have mercy on me a sinner... 1 Chronicles 3 & 4 - Day 564 (link to today's reading)
Scripture: 1 Chronicles 4:9-10 Commentary (biblehub.com): These two beautiful verses come in the midst of a dry and (to us) comparatively uninteresting genealogy, like an oasis in a desert. We know nothing at all of the person here mentioned except what is recorded in this passage. Yet there is so much of meaning in these brief sentences, that Jabez is certainly to the readers of this book more than a name...It was a prayer to a covenant God - the God of Israel; It was a prayer for blessing; i.e. for good as the expression of Divine favor and approbation; It was a prayer for prosperity; "Enlarge my coast." We know nothing of Jabez's way of life, whether he was a husbandman, or a warrior, or a ruler; but it is clear that he asked for enlargement of means, or authority, or territory, etc.; It was a prayer for strength: "That thy hand might be with me." Observe THE ANSWER to his prayer. The petition was large, but it was offered to a King, who was rather pleased with its magnitude. There was no hesitation, no withholding. A lesson this as to God's willingness to hear and answer the supplications of his people. Application: Gems of truth are often hidden in seemingly random words and names within the bible. Take your time with God's Word and you will find many treasures worth more than mountains of gold. Prayer: Lord, reveal Yourself to me... 1 Chronicles 1 & 2 - Day 563 (link to today's reading)
Scripture: 1 Chronicles 1 & 2 Summary (gotquestions.org): The Books of 1 & 2 Chronicles cover mostly the same information as 1 & 2 Samuel and 1 & 2 Kings. Perhaps the biggest distinction is that 1 & 2 Chronicles focus more on the priestly aspect of the time period. The Book of 1 Chronicles was written after the exile to help those returning to Israel understand how to worship God. The history focused on the Southern Kingdom, the tribes of Judah, Benjamin, and Levi. These tribes tended to be more faithful to God... The first 9 chapters of 1 Chronicles are dedicated to lists and genealogies. Further lists and genealogies are scattered throughout the rest of 1 Chronicles. In between, the Book of 1 Chronicles records David’s ascension to the throne and his actions thereafter. The book concludes with David’s son Solomon becoming King of Israel. Briefly outlined, the Book of 1 Chronicles is as follows: Chapters 1:1-9:23 - Selective Genealogies; Chapters 9:24-12:40 - David’s ascent; Chapters 13:1-20:30 -David’s reign. Application: Genealogies remind us that God knows us personally and cares. Prayer: Whom am I that You would know my name? |
