Jeremiah 41 - Day 691 (link to reading)
Scripture: Jeremiah 41:-5 Commentary (melissabeaty.com): God gave Gedaliah wise captains to warn him of danger, but he did not listen. If he had listened, he would not have been killed and the remnant would have stayed in the promised land instead of sojourning into Egypt against God’s command. So, when a wise person gives you advice, take it to heart. Don’t be like Gedaliah and have to pay a grave consequence for ignoring sound advice. Application: For whatever reason, Governor Gedaliah didn't listen to his advisors and trusted Ishmael. His disregard for wise counsel not only cost him his life, but many others also suffered as well. Prayer: Lord speak, Your servant is listening... Jeremiah 40 - Day 690 (link to reading)
Scripture: Jeremiah 40:1-6 Commentary (melissabeaty.com): Nebuzaradan was a Gentile. He was not under any covenant with God nor had he any relationship with the Lord. Yet he still told Jeremiah that “The Lord thy God hath pronounced this evil upon this place… because ye have sinned against the Lord, and have not obeyed his voice” (Jer. 40:2-3). Nebuzaradan, despite not knowing God, was able to recognize God’s judgment according to His laws. Application: The Babylonians were used by God to punish the Israelites for their disobedience. Nebuzarandan, a captain in the pagan army recognized and acknowledged that YHWH God had granted them victory, but was kind to Jeremiah and allowed him to move freely throughout the land. The point is that God takes care of His obedient children, and can do it however He wants. Prayer: Lord, save Your children... Jeremiah 39 - Day 689 (link to reading)
Scripture: Jeremiah 39:1-3 Commentary (melissabeaty.com): In this chapter, five distinct prophecies are fulfilled. Babylon defeats Jerusalem (Jer. 4:7-20), Jerusalem is burned (Isa. 1:7, Isa. 4:3-4), Zedekiah’s household is destroyed but Zedekiah is kept alive (Jer. 34:4-5), the Jews are deported (Isa. 39:6-7), and Jeremiah is kept safe through it all (Jer. 1:18-19). Some of these prophecies were proclaimed by Jeremiah, but some were also spoken by Isaiah. Despite all the rebellion of the people, kings, and princes of Judah, God’s words came to pass exactly as He said that it would. Application: For the past 38 chapters God warned His children of what would happen if they continued to disobey His commandments. God isn't slow, rather He is extremely patient. Prayer: Change my heart oh God... Jeremiah 38 - Day 688 (link to reading)
Scripture: Jeremiah 38:1-10 Commentary (theologyofwork.org): ...the nameless Gentile slave (Ebed-melech simply means “slave of the king”) who stands out as faithful. Although his immigration status and racial difference made him a vulnerable worker, his faithfulness to God led him to blow the whistle on injustice in his workplace. As a result, a life was saved. An anonymous cog in the wheel made a life-and-death difference. Ebed-melech’s action on the prophet’s behalf illustrated Jeremiah’s message that faithfulness to God outweighs all other workplace considerations. Application: Ebed-melech's fear (reverence) of (for) YHWH compelled him to do what was right. We have that same opportunity today. Prayer: Lord, I give You my heart... Jeremiah 37 - Day 687 (link to reading)
Scripture: Jeremiah 37:1-10 Commentary (thewarehouse.blog): Many people want the blessings of God without the personal cost. They want Him to provide for their needs, give them what they want, help sustain them in the tough times – but when it comes to actually following with their whole heart they disappear. “Give me the good things but don’t ask anything of me,” is what often is lived out. This was the case in point of the leadership of Judah. They didn’t want to listen to the words of rebuke and change God was calling that Jeremiah was giving. They simply wanted the hardship and turmoil to end. They wanted the blessing of God without the personal cost. On many fronts, as they still recognized God (not in whole but in part) they were more content to live in a superficial religion. Application: God is the Creator of the Universe, the Lord of Lords and King of Kings, the First and the Last, etc. Yet, most people treat YHWH God like Santa Clause, a Genie from a lamp, or a lucky rabbit's foot. Prayer: Lord, have mercy on me a sinner. Empower me Holy Spirit to love and obey You and Your commandments... |
